Capability of vehicles to satisfactorily operate on ethanol Blend petrol.
The Australian Government has limited the level of ethanol in petrol in Australia to a maximum of 10%, or E10. Most new and many older vehicle models can run on ethanol blended petrol. Vehicle manufacturers and importers have provided the following information on the capability of their vehicles to operate on ethanol fuel blends up to a maximum of 10% ethanol, subject to the fuel meeting the octane requirements for the vehicle and complying with relevant mandatory Australian fuel quality standards and particularly proper blending of the ethanol into the petrol. To avoid operational issues, vehicles should be maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s servicing procedures using genuine replacement parts. This will ensure that the fuel systems of vehicles listed as suitable to use either E5 or E10 blended petrol continue to be ethanol tolerant. For more information about why some makes and models can't handle ethanol please read the additional information posted after this list.
VEHICLE MODEL SUITABILITY FOR E5 OR E10 USE
The following table lists vehicle models suitability to run on E5 or E10 ethanol blended petrol. Before use of E5 or E10 in motor vehicles not listed below or if you are unsure, you should consult your handbook or manufacturer to check if the fuel is suitable.

The Australian Design Rules (ADRs) are harmonised with international standards as specified in the UN ECE Regulations. The same requirements apply throughout the European Union. New vehicles certified to these standards will increasingly use advanced emission control technologies that strictly control the engine’s operating parameters and have therefore more stringent fuel quality requirements.
The maximum level of ethanol blended petrol in Europe is E5.
Depending on what markets certain models are sold in, Australian vehicles may be built to either a European specification (E5 compatible) or some other specification that is E10 compatible. This is the reason recommendations regarding E10 suitability will differ from one manufacturer to another.
The use of E10 petrol in vehicles that are E5 compatible may also result in material compatibility problems in the fuel system.

can you tell me what vehicles can run on E85 please
|

Hi Simon,
If your vehicle is compatible to run on E10, then with the aid of a White lightning conversion kit it will run on E85. There are two issues at hand; Firstly: is the fuel system in my car suitable for ethanol, and the answer is most FFI vehicles produced after 1986 are ethanol compatible, but this does vary depending on the maker. Please check the list we have above. Secondly: as ethanol burns differently to petrol you need to increase the volume of fuel injected into the engine to obtain the correct air/fuel mixture. If ethanol is burnt too lean it give extremely poor mileage. This is where the White lightning conversion unit comes in, it adjust the amount of fuel being injected into the engine to insure that the optimum air/fuel mixture is obtained. can my nissan tiida run on e10

Hi Trish,
Depending on the age of your car, it should have no problems with e10. Nisson Corperation state that all models post 2004 are E10 compatable and I would suspect that many older models are too. The older your car is the less efficent it will be running on E10 and you may have to replace your petrol filter due to rust and other sediments that tend to collect in old car petrol tanks. I hope this has answered your question. |

Hi Steven,
Yes your 2003 Toyota Hilux will run on E10 just fine. in fact it would probaly run on E30 (not available in Australia at this time) even better than E10. Cheers, Richard Ballinger Flexfuelkits.com.au |

Hi David,
Your mums' car will be fine with just one tank of E10. The issue would be compatibility of her fuel system lines and pump; which over time and multiple tank fills of E10 might show up. First real problem might be that the E10 will clean out her petrol tank, which might result in the fuel filter becoming blocked; this is fixed by replacing the filter (which should be done at regular service intervals) Cheers, Richard Ballinger |

Hello Vikas,
Your Toyota Camery will be fine on E10, Personally I have owned a 93 Camery V6 which we ran on a mixtere of about E30 ~ E40 and the car loved it. The engine had more power and ran smoother and cooler. I hear in Brazil there are people who drive toyota's on E85 without any conversion kits. I wouldn't advise this, but it shows that the onboard computers in the toyota has a wide opperational range. cheers, Richard Ballinger |

Hello Demmin,
Your Honda will be fine, one or two tanks of E10 won't course you any real issues. Over hundreds of tank fulls containing ethanol, there is a chance that some ethanol non complient seals or parts in your fuel lines might fail, but you will not see this from just a tank or two. Probably the biggest issue with an older car when you start to use E10 is that the ethanol will clean your fuel tank stripping build up of gunk from years of continents often found in unleaded fuel. This gunk once seperated from your tank walls will end up in your fuel filter. This issue is solved by replacing the fuel filter. Another interesting point is most car makers have been using ethanol compliant parts since 1986 so your Honda is probably E10 compliant even though you didn't find it on the list. This list is only what the various auto makers would guarantee here in Australia to the department of consumer affairs in relation to E10. It looks like Honda didn't want to take any liablity and only listed it's most recent models. It is well known fact that in Brazil all cars run on a mixture of ethanol enhanced fuel from E10 ~ E100 and I'm sure there are many older Hondas than yours to be found running on E30 or more. Bottom line is your car will be fine, just fill up with your regular unleaded as soon as you can. If you find that the engine is running a little ruff, have the fuel filter checked as it might get blocked need changing. Cheers, Richard Ballinger www.FlexFuelKits.com. au |

Hi Rob,
The data on our website comes directly from the Australian Consumers association's website and this was the data supplied by each manufacturer. Your Merc will run on E10, but a high performance car like your would run better on Premium. Its hard to know what the quality of the unleaded fuel in E10 might be, blending varies so much from supplier to supplier... If you have invested in such a nice car pay the extra couple of buck a tank and fill up with Premium as you will probably get your money back on the extra mileage you get per tank. On the other hand if it was my car I would be running it on E85, which is a cleaner, higher octane fuel that your car would respond to, only issue is supply at this time. Maybe in a couple of years when there is more about you will consider it, but until then Premium fuel is the only thing I would put in your tank, it if were me. |

I hav ejust bought a Audi S5, V8. The Audi dealer says no ethanol but your site says OK to E10. Ican get E10 95 Octane in Australia. Does this risk the engine or Warranty?
